Aerial students have different hair requirements, you may speak with your teacher about what is needed.
Most other dance classes have a hair requirement of Ballet Bun at Crown of the head, with a hairnet.
This means hair slicked back into pony at back top of head “crown”- wet with water, then hairspray or gel to keep in place. Then wind in sections and pin as you wind to keep in place.
Or use an easy “hair donut”- place over the ponytail, spread hair out around the donut, loop another hair tie around, then pin the extra hair around and under the donut. Place hairnet over all and pin with straight hair pins or bobby pins.
1. Prep and Slick
Dampen & Smooth: Lightly mist the hair with water and apply a generous amount of hair gel. Brush Up: Use a smoothing or boar-bristle brush to gather all the hair into a high ponytail. Placement: The base of the ponytail should sit at the crown of the head (diagonally back from the ears, following the natural upward angle of your cheekbones).
Secure: Use a sturdy, snag-free hair elastic to tie the ponytail tight
2. Form the Bun
Twist the Tail: Firmly twist the ponytail to create a tight "rope" of hair.
Wrap into a Spiral: Coil the twisted hair around the base of the hair tie in a flat, snail-shell shape.
Keep it Flat: While coiling, press the hair to keep the bun as flat against the head as possible.
Tuck & Pin: Tuck the ends of the hair under the bun and insert bobby pins or hairpins around the outer edge, pushing them into the base of your scalp to lock the hair in place
3. Add the Hairnet
Match and Wrap: Choose a fine-mesh hairnet that closely matches your hair color.
Secure the Net: Place the hairnet over the bun. Twist the net, wrap it around the bun a second (or third) time, and stretch it tight.
Lock it Down: Pin the bun again over the hairnet to secure the netting in place and flatten the shape further.
4. Finish
Flyaways: Spray the hair thoroughly with hairspray and use a fine-tooth comb to smooth down any remaining bumps or baby hairs.
All hair accessories for younger students will be at the Rehearsal and at the Recital backstage to keep them together!
